Thanks to Charlotte Hollingsworth and the rest of the Ladies 5s for this match report!
Saturday 20th January – The ominous grey clouds above Guildford did not dampen the spirits of the Ladies 5s as we arrived for our match against Surrey Spartans.
After a dodgy start, involving Al losing her bike, Charlotte dashing home to collect the right kit and our captain Jess ‘sabotaging’ our ringer from the 3s (Abbey – great addition, thanks again!) by throwing her off the scent with the wrong postcode for the pitch, the game finally commenced.
The crowds were building, three people deep in places. Guildford didn’t know what was about to hit them. The first half proceeded with some excellent distribution across the pitch from defence and some silky slick skills in the D from attackers. Sadly, despite numerous chances and plenty of possession, there were no goals by half time, but at 0-0 the tension was high and there was everything to play for.
We held our nerve in the second half, amid Al having the closest goal of the game (sadly still not an ACTUAL goal), as well as the whole team sliding to the floor at various points of the game (special mention must go to Caitlin for accompanying this with her own sound effects, followed by near punch up) and only two of us (Cathy and Jo Macey) sustaining minor injuries.
Final score – 0-0.
The team played really well together and even celebrated the result as though it was a win, at least we didn’t lose?! As said by a key member of the team – Emily Griffin – We may not be at the top of the league but we are winners at life, fancy dress and baked potato consumption.
We like to finish our report with special mention to Kristian (with a K) Grey and his inspirational comments at the end filling the team with confidence for our next match!!
